The main work was done with textures to make them look photo-realistic. Here are some examples:

Then it was necessary to add dimensions to several objects: snow on roof seems flat and windows, too. First, I tried adding volumetric snow as a separate tessellated box but result was too cartoon-looking. So, I divided roof by faces and added some noise for relief.

It was nice to model an early winter thickness of snow on roof is small (see photos in text before). Then I added relief to windows (really windows were made later but this is not important), noise to logs and hanging icicles.

Once one house was completed I returned to first sketch and tried to reproduce the initial composition. I placed boxes with same texture instead of other houses. (Church for background placed temporary.)
