Faking SSS with Mental Ray
Added on: Sun Nov 23 2003

Object properties

We also have to make the object generate and receive the caustic photons.

Right-click the test-model and select Properties. Under the Mental ray rollout mark the Generate Caustics checkbox.

And now for the thing that you really came here for: the material!

Material

For the material we make a simple Raytrace material with some mental ray maps.

1. Go the Material Editor by pressing "M". In the first material slot, press the Material Type button, and from the Material/Map Browser that appears, select the Raytrace material.

2. Now, under the Raytrace Basic Parameters rollout, set the Diffuse Color to a VERY bright red, and the Transparency Color to totally white. Also, under the Specular Highlight settings set the Specular level somewhere around 80 and 100, and Glossiness to around 50-60.
