Capcom to use Softimage|XSI for authoring

 Date: Tue Sep 24 2002
Bit of game industry news; Capcom Co. added Softimage|XSI to their game authoring solution, meaning from now on they will be primarely using XSI tools to develop their games.

At the Tokyo Game Show, Softimage Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc., announced today that Capcom Co. Ltd., a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, has adopted the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system, the industry's leading 3-D nonlinear production environment, as its main game authoring solution. "To maintain our leadership position in the market, it's paramount that we partner with companies that provide innovative and productive tools," said Yoshiki Okamoto, executive director, Capcom.

"Softimage set the standard in the games industry with SOFTIMAGE|3D and have done so again with SOFTIMAGE|XSI which we have chosen, after evaluating all of the software on the market today, to use as our main game authoring solution." As an industry front-runner with a solid reputation for product development, Capcom continues to release new hit titles and dynamic software for the Sony PlayStation* 2.

This, in addition to its ongoing efforts to develop a multitude of 'killer software' and its multi-platform strategy, helps the company retain its position as a leading supplier of software for next-generation game equipment, such as Nintendo's GameCube* and Microsoft's Xbox* game consoles, and is the reason that Capcom is attracting attention both in Japan and overseas. "For several years, Capcom has been using SOFTIMAGE|3D to create hit games titles such as Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil and Onimusha," said Softimage's managing director, Michael Stojda.

"We take pride in knowing Capcom chose SOFITMAGE|XSI for the main development platform for their next generation games due to the system's productivity and creative flexibility as well as the high levels of support provided by our Japan games team." Softimage delivers intelligent game solutions supporting every stage of the game development process, from creation to final export. Designed as an integrated creative environment, the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system offers non-destructive editing throughout the development cycle - a synthesis of open solutions to create, validate and optimize in-game content, connecting SOFTIMAGE|XSI directly to the on-target game or testing environment.

The 3-D nonlinear production environment also provides the tools and flexibility to build a completely customized pipeline, affording a measurable improvement in productivity: artists work faster, the WYSIWYG real-time shader architecture streamlines custom effects development, and the dotXSI* pipeline focuses resources on creating artwork instead of utilities. "SOFTIMAGE|XSI's powerful animation editing features allow our designers to control animation at all levels, ranging from low-level F-Curve keyframing to middle-level Dopesheet editing to high-level Animation Mixing." said Jun Takeuchi, director of Onimusha game title. "Our games feature both human and creature characters as well as many texture details. SOFTIMAGE|XSI provides the best tools to help our designers bring those complex characters to life."

"The SOFTIMAGE|XSI high-level animation functionality provides designers with an intuitive new level of animation control, which is above standard motion capture and keyframed motion. The compatibility with SOFTIMAGE|3D scene data makes it easy to reuse existing assets and integrate SOFTIMAGE|XSI in a game development pipeline," said Shinji Mikami, producer of the Resident Evil series. "SOFTIMAGE|XSI supports Visual Basic and Java scripting. Because these languages are common we can use many existing references. Even designers can easily create custom commands and macros. This frees our programmers to focus on high-level plug-in tool development," said Motoji Fujita, Capcom System R&D.
