NASA gives away the precious Blue Marble

Probably the most sought-after category of textures are naturally colored, high resolution maps of our planet. Freely available textures often lacked detail, didn't come with an accompanying cloud layer or were just a sore for the eyes due to their widely exaggerated colors and inaccuracy. On the other hand, commercial texture sets used to be extremely expensive - in any case hardly affordable for private animation work.

NASA's "Earth Observatory" staff seem to have a heart of corn. With their "Blue Marble" treasure, all the people out there, who could only dream of creating photorealistic close-up animations and stills of Planet Earth, are now able to obtain all the necessary texture components on request even up to a resolution of 1km/pixel for free! Note that texture sets of this quality and resolution otherwise use to sell for USD 20,000 and more.

"Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet. These images are freely available to educators, scientists, museums, and the public."

Have fun rendering! :-)
