Digimation Ships FaceStation 2 for 3ds max and Maya
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Wed Apr 28 2004
St. Rose, LA - Apr 28 2004 - Digimation, a leading provider of 3D animation software, announces the immediate availability of FaceStation 2, a video-based 3D facial animation software suite. FaceStation 2 uses a patented computer vision software engine to recognize and automatically track facial expressions from live video or pre-recorded video clips. In real-time, actual facial expressions are analyzed, captured and used to animate fully shaded 3D models in 3ds max or Maya with no motion capture hardware, facial markers or offline rendering processes required. FaceStation 2 also includes Avatar Editor, allowing the creation of ready-to-animate characters complete with morph targets simply using front and side photographs.

Prior to FaceStation 2, realistic 3D facial animation was limited to a handful of high-end projects with the requisite large budgets. This was due to the expensive motion capture hardware and laborious manual keyframe editing and processing involved.

"FaceStation is a fundamental advance in the animation process," said Jen Hamilton, Director of Art Research and Development at Black Box Games. "FaceStation's real-time integration into 3ds max gives us instant facial feedback. The quick setup time and intuitive interface allows us to create highly expressive character animation in a fraction of the time previously required."

"FaceStation 2 is one of those rare plug-ins that actually changes the rules of animation, said David Avgikos, President of Digimation. The technology in FaceStation 2 makes high-quality facial animation simple and inexpensive for the first time ever. We expect it will enable the creation of sophisticated character animation in many projects that could not otherwise consider it.
