Meta Motion makes SIGGRAPH history - demonstrating first ever real-time animation of a scanned digitized human real-time animated by motion capture at SIGGRAPH.

SIGGRAPH 2002,

San Antonio, Texas. - July 23, 2002 -

San Francisco-based Company, Meta Motion announced a major breakthrough in motion capture history, today, by animating a digitized human live in real-time. Meta Motion also presented the SIGGRAPH debut of the "Motion Captor" system, an optical motion capture system from Spain.

Meta Motion, a leading provider of affordable full-body, hand, and facial motion capture solutions for the visual effects and entertainment industries, announced today it will be demonstrating a full-body motion capture solution at GDC 2001 to streamline character animation in game development.

Visit Meta Motion in Booth #20092 at the SIGGRAPH 2002 exhibition in San Antonio, Texas, July 23-25 for a demonstration of The Motion Captor optical motion capture system and full-body motion capture and scanning using the most revolutionary motion capture solutions in the industry.

"Meta Motion relied on InSpeck's new Full Body Model Retargeting tool to create a file ready for real-time animation in Kaydara's (FiLMBOX) 'aka 'Kaydara mocap' software," says Meta Motion's CEO, Lee Dickholtz. "The process resulted in a 3D representation of the show's main performer, was animated live, at a full resolution of 1280x1024 on a PC equipped with a Quadro 4 900XGL by nVidia and PNY by our 'Motion Captor' System debut."

This presentation was also the SIGGRAPH debut of the Motion Captor Optical motion capture system. Motion Captor is a robust, easy and powerful optical motion capture system from STT, a Spanish company. (STT has already won has half the motion capture market in Spain.)

"The system has an unmatched optical tracking ability thanks to the software's use of revolutionary biomechanical skeleton. This greatly increase's the system's ability to capture clean data, with minimal occlusion." says Dickholtz. "Often the data can be used in the chosen 3D software with out any clean-up or gap-filling or editing," he adds.

Motion Captor uses widely available off-the-shelf components for affordability and easy expansion. It is easy to set up on location (takes about an hour). Calibration is a breeze - just two minutes and doesn't need to be repeated until the cameras are moved.

It comes in different configurations - 1 or 2 actor, real-time or non-real-time versions. The real-time version is operated directly within Kaydara mocap, and the non-real-time version includes export plugins for Kaydara mocap and motionbuilder, Maya, Softimage 3D / XSI and BVH (for Character Studio). The exporter plugins allow for retargeting of the data to the character's skeleton. Motion Captor is the lowest priced real-time optical motion capture system, with prices under $60,000. A dual-actor real-time system is less than $80,000 (not including Kaydara mocap).

Motion Captor is simple to learn and use - training takes a day or two, and companies who purchase the system find they are able to get up to full production capability quickly once the system is set up.

"People prefer less expensive systems that are easier and more powerful," says Lee Dickholtz, president of Meta Motion. "Our systems are making it easier game developers and other animators to afford an effective motion capture solution." he adds.

In addition to showing the 'Motion Captor' system, Meta Motion will also be showcasing body the Gypsy Motion Capture system, the AVSoft FT2000 face tracker, 5DT 14 sensor wireless data gloves, FAMOUS 3D facial animation solutions and Kaydara mocap (formerly known as FiLMBOX motioncapture.) Meta Motion's products work well together to enable full-body-capture - body, face and hands
