3Dconnexion Motion Controllers to Support SOFTIMAGE|XSI
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Tue Mar 23 2004
Los Gatos, CA - March 23, 2004 - SOFTIMAGE|XSI Users Can Create Compelling Content Faster and with Greater Comfort 3Dconnexion(R), a Logitech(R) (SWX:LOGN) (Nasdaq:LOGI) company, and the leading developer of 3D motion controllers announced today that its award-winning line of motion controllers now supports the SOFTIMAGE(R)|XSI(R) system. With this announcement, 3Dconnexion now supports all leading digital content creation (DCC) applications including previously announced Adobe Photoshop, Discreet's 3ds max(TM), Alias' Maya(R), Kaydara's MOTIONBUILDER(TM) and MAXON's CINEMA 4D(TM) and BodyPaint 3D(TM), and now SOFTIMAGE|XSI.

Using Two Handed Power(TM), the SOFTIMAGE/XSI animator places one hand on the 3D motion controller to simultaneously dolly, track and tumble, (in other words pan, zoom and rotate) free or target cameras. At the same time, the other hand on the mouse is used to create or edit objects and textures. This provides a more immersive and natural creation environment that enhances creativity, quality, and speed of animation projects. Another benefit is that creating the animation is more comfortable because more than half the mouse movements are eliminated and both hands share the load of driving the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system to its full power.

This concurrent use of the motion controller and mouse results in unique benefits due to the power of the drivers announced by 3Dconnexion. One such feature is the ability to quickly make changes to objects or sub-objects with the mouse, while using the motion controller to move around the scene and visualize for immediate review. For example, the mouse hand can make edits to textures in SOFTIMAGE|XSI Texture Editor, while a 3Dconnexion motion controller can simultaneously navigate in viewports and inspect the results of applying the texture changes. The SOFTIMAGE|XSI animator can map widely used SOFTIMAGE|XSI functions, or they can use a powerful macro editor to create their own custom functions to tailor the device for maximum benefit. All these features and more are easily accessible via a built-in control panel.

"I am blown away with how easily I can navigate around in my scenes," said John Bell, Art Director and Founder of SilentPartnerStudios. "Using the 3Dconnexion(R) SpaceBall(R) 5000 allows me to navigate cameras intuitively and naturally. I love that I can configure buttons to quickly access SOFTIMAGE|XSI functions. This allows me to better visualize my scene and work more efficiently with SOFTIMAGE|XSI, making me more productive. I cannot see myself working without the SpaceBall 5000 in the future."

"Using a 3Dconnexion motion controller like the SpaceBall 5000 during the content creation process adds a higher level of control for SOFTIMAGE|XSI power users in the film and TV animation markets," said Alan Waxenberg, Business Development Manager, 3rd party for Softimage. "Simultaneously navigating with the motion controller, while modifying textures or editing sub-objects with the mouse, allows artists to completely immerse themselves in their creation."

Software drivers supporting the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system are available today from http://www.3Dconnexion.com.
