3Dconnexion Launches Motion Controllers for Digital Content
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Wed Nov 12 2003
November 12, 2003 - 3Dconnexion(R), a Logitech(R) (SWX:LOGN) (NASDAQ:LOGI) company, announced today that its award winning line of 3D motion controllers has been enhanced to provide solutions for game developers, and animation artists working in film and television. 3Dconnexion motion controllers provide two key benefits: a significant reduction in hand fatigue and the faster creation of visually compelling content. These benefits are of particular importance to digital content creation artists because of the nature of their work, which requires repetitive and precise modifications of models and scenes in the quest for realism and entertainment.
Independent studies and feedback from 3D professionals confirm that a two handed work style offers significant advantages. With a motion controller in one hand and a standard mouse in the other, productivity can increase by a third and the amount of mouse movement can be reduced by half. The result is that individuals can create content faster and with greater comfort.

Modeling with only a traditional mouse and keyboard requires frequent, time-consuming switches between edit and navigation modes. Artists working in intense professional environments use standard 2D input devices to repeatedly manipulate and view a 3D model or scene. This can lead to excessive mouse movements and related fatigue. With the 3Dconnexion solution, one hand uses the controller to smoothly move the scene for best viewing, while the other hand uses the mouse to create and edit.

When animating using the full 6-degrees of freedom on the 3Dconnexion motion controller, artists can quickly and easily navigate the camera across all axes to rapidly create complex animation paths. Simultaneously, the mouse can be used to scrub the timeline and make fine adjustments to models. This unique combination of 3D motion controller and mouse is easier to use and simply more intuitive, allowing the artist to become fully immersed in the scene.

Modeling and animation artists are enthusiastic about joining the ranks of over 250,000 3D computer aided design professionals who already use 3Dconnexion's proven two-handed work style. "I hate to model without a 3Dconnexion motion controller anymore," said Yancey Clinton, a certified 3ds max instructor. "Although I only recently began using one, I am already hooked. The motion controller adds a level of interactivity to modeling and animation simply not possible when you use just a keyboard and mouse. It is an excellent productivity booster for any 3D content creation artist."

"3Dconnexion motion controllers will profoundly change the way artists create more visual content," said Wolfgang Hausen, CEO of 3Dconnexion. "The power of computers and software has grown so substantially in recent years, the old mouse and keyboard set-up just can't keep up. We're excited about the increased capability, as well as greater comfort this breakthrough technology will bring our new users."

In a separate release, 3Dconnexion also announced support for a number of key applications including 3ds max(TM) from Discreet, CINEMA 4D(TM) and BodyPaint 3D(TM) from MAXON, Maya(R) from Alias, MOTIONBUILDER(TM) from Kaydara and Photoshop(R) from Adobe.
