 Maxon releases new BodyPaint 3D R2 Posted by: amigo Source: Press Release Date: Thu Jul 31 2003 MAXON - July 29, 2003 - award-winning developer of 3D software applications is pleased to announce the release of BodyPaint 3D Release 2. With development aided by Academy Award winning special effects team, Sony Pictures Imageworks, MAXON have created a new version that includes cutting edge features and enhancements that closely match the ideal way 3D designers would like to work. The end result is the most powerful 3D texturing application in the industry available at a price that everyone can afford.
Among new features are:
- Improved overall speed;
- Full OpenGL support;
- Higher shading precision with bilinear interpolation for textures;
- Dodge, Burn and Spronge Tools;
- Smear tool as separate tool;
- New Color Chooser with additional display modes and a mixing area;
- Support for Photoshop filters (including all filters build on the Photoshop Plugin API);
- Gradient tool;
- Real-time dynamic brush preview;
- Painting on multiple materials;
- Enhanced Material manager with full layer control and channel display;
- Active Tool manager;
- New UV management;
- Relax UV tool;
- Support for embedded TIFFs;
- UV realign tool;
- New UV tools, including Terrace, Shrink/Grow Selection, Select Connected, Max UV and Fit UV to Canvas;
- Asynchronous UV mapping dialog;
- UV autoloading;
- Quicklight manager;
= Material assignment display;
- User-defined menu sets;
- Transform tool with real-time update, selection and layer masks and texture flipping.
A top priority for enhancements was creating fast and easy-to-use tools for distortion free painting. The most powerful new feature is Projection Painting, which allows textures to be painted onto a 3D model without UV seams appearing. Used in conjunction with RayBrush mode, 3D artists can create perfectly mapped textures and see results in real time. Since properly organized UV coordinates are essential, BodyPaint 3D has everything the 3D artist needs to adjust UV's for low-resolution game models and high-resolution matte paintings, such as new unwrapping algorithms and 15 new UV tools for perfect preparation.
The other main focus during development was workflow. An all-new Paint Setup Wizard reduces the time necessary to prepare a scene for painting. All of the common 2D painting tools 3D artists demand are now available plus a layering system giving artists the power to combine various effects and experiment with confidence. MAXON's close links with Adobe strengthen yet again thanks to the Adobe Photoshop filter support. Users are now able to use many Photoshop compatible filters.
Enhancements to BodyPaint 3D Release 2's OpenGL support enables intelligent switching on the fly between hardware and software shading. Artists benefit from the speed of OpenGL when moving around the scene and the swift responsiveness of MAXON's own software shading while painting models.
BodyPaint 3D Release 2 also comes with completely reworked plugins to allow exchange with other popular applications like 3ds max, Maya and Lightwave. These plugins transfer models, textures and UVs between BodyPaint 3D and the artist's 3D application of choice with minimal effort. Users of MAXON's own CINEMA 4D can naturally use BodyPaint 3D as a fully integrated module.
The new version also has full support for the latest Wacom graphics tablets including the Intuos2, Cintiq and Graphire giving the ultimate control over your painting. The effect of any parameter can be controlled by the pressure, tilt, direction or finger wheel of a computer graphics tablet,
Like Maxon's award-winning 3D modeling and animation program, CINEMA 4D, the interface of BodyPaint 3D can be customized completely to suit an artist's personal style. Layouts designed to offer plenty of premium painting space are included. Non-modal managers provide complete control over the painting environment, and include real time previews of colors, brushes and other options as individual parameters are adjusted.
Other functions of BodyPaint 3D are still unparalleled in the whole world of 3D painting applications. The RayBrush mode, offering the ability to render a scene and continue painting inside the rendered image, Multi-Channel Brushes, enabling artists to paint a complex material with up to 10 channels with just one brush stroke and a full featured high-quality rendering engine (based on CINEMA 4D technology). Plus the most advanced and robust multiprocessor support available on Windows and Macintosh computers.
