Index Begins Sales of Sega's ''Animanium'' for US Market
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Tue Jul 29 2003
Tokyo, Japan - July 29, 2003 - Index Corporation, a leading provider of content and information services (Head Office: Tokyo, Japan) has agreed on a US market sales contract for Animanium, a software package used to create 3D CG (Computer Graphics) characters and animation developed by Sega Corporation. Sales of the software will be launched this summer through USA Index Corporation the US subsidiary of Index Corporation.

Animanium allows regular PC users to create 3D CG characters and animation directly on their screens without the usual complex settings and techniques that regular high-performance 3DCG Animation software requires. Developed by the Nakamura Laboratory, Graduate School of Tokyo University in the Department of Mechano-Informatics, the technology came from studying humanoid control engineering and the idea that in future animators could produce better more natural animation if they could more directly express their ideas rather than navigating the complex input methods involved with current motion capture, logical simulation methods. The result was technology that massively reduces production time and costs.

The product was first released in Japan to the Education market in February 2002 as "Animanium Educators Edition," followed by the "Animanium Creators Edition" in October 2002 targeted at the CG Studio, Game software and web development markets. To date, there is an installed base of 100 companies and institutions using and evaluating the product.

To address markets outside Japan, the product was further improved and "Sega Animanium" was developed. Sega Animanium allows users to manipulate numerous animated characters at the same time, and also simulate movements while keeping certain points fixed.

The product received the Special Award for Technological Innovation at the 1st Annual International 3D Awards* (May 9th, 2003, Copenhagen, Denmark) where it was very highly acclaimed. Through the strength of this product, Index enters the home of CG production in the US with a content production tool that will help strengthen ties with the Animation, Game, and Film production industries. Index is keen to position itself in the US market with the next generation of content development, supply and information services.

* "The International 3D Awards" is an annual event that is Europe's largest convention of 3D Computer Graphics, recognizing the latest corporate and individual achievements in the field. The Special Award for Technological Innovation is a new award that aims to recognize 3D technology that displays the highest levels of innovation, practicality and efficiency.
