 SIGGRAPH 2003 - New Zealand's Digital Media Showcase Posted by: amigo Source: Press Release Date: Wed Jul 23 2003 San Diego, CA - July 23, 2003 - Hot on the heels of The Lord of the Rings blockbuster, New Zealand's leading 3D animators, computer graphics, and special effects companies are set for another moviemaking marathon in the form of King Kong, cementing the country's reputation as a world class center for digital special effects and animation.
The impressive line-up of New Zealand companies attending this year's SIGGRAPH includes Oscar winners, Discover Award winners and Wired Editor's Choice Award winners, acclaimed for their commercials, special effects, animations, and industrial designs.
The New Zealand SIGGRAPH showcase includes Academy Award-winning visual effects studio iWeta Digital, which was given the green light by Universal Studios early this year to begin work on the Peter Jackson remake of 30s classic King Kong.
Weta will be joined at SIGGRAPH TechTalks by NZ companies Oktobor, Massive, Right Hemisphere, and Applied Research Associates NZ (ARANZ), all of whom helped create the extraordinary fantasy world of Middle Earth.
Also making waves at SIGGRAPH will be:
-- HITLab, demonstrating its MagicBook technology, which combines virtual content with real pages;
-- Character Animation Technologies, known by animators worldwide for its CAT (Character Animation Toolkit) plugin for Discreet's industry leading 3dstudiomax;
-- Digital Presentation Limited, a company that has taken the architectural walkthrough to new levels, creating simulations that enable accurate design, costing, financing and marketing of large-scale construction projects and easy integration with new projects;
-- The Media Design School, which specializes in providing highly trained individuals to work in the visual communication, digital technology and computer arts industry worldwide -- with the majority of their students coming from the US;
-- Sidhe Interactive, an officially licensed game developer for Microsoft Xbox, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and Nintendo of America; and
-- Flux Animation Studio, which will demonstrate its bold illustrative traditional and 3d animation used to create international award winning commercials.
Los Angeles based New Zealand Investment Manager Catherine Ragan said her country's design showcase at the world's most significant digital design exhibition was a landmark moment.
"New Zealand's limited domestic market forces companies to think globally from day one, benchmarking themselves against the world's best," Regan said.
"Our digital design industry demonstrates the talent our pioneering spirit engenders. The country itself provides the 'blank canvas' with unique wilderness areas that ensure we are viewed as a great place to make high quality films.
"These movie projects have undoubtedly turned attention towards us and we are keen to maintain our profile as a leader in creativity and innovation in all fields of digital graphics."
