Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Tue May 20 2003
New York, NY May 20, 2003 - The Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences has officially opened its 2003 Call for Entries, accepting submissions of Machinima works for this years Machinima Film Festival (Machinima films are films made within a real-time virtual 3D environment, i.e. 3D game engine). The early submission deadline is August 1, 2003 and the final deadline is September 15, 2003. This years festival is to be held in New York City in October 2003.

Last years festival was a great success receiving press in high profile media outlets such as the New York Times, CNN and the Associated Press. A new wave of Machinima works such as Dead On Ques Fake Science (Best Visual Design), Militia II (Best Sound), Mike Beerys Thin Ice (Best Direction), and Jake Hughes Anachronox: The Movie (Best Writing and Best Picture) were awarded in the first festival to recognize excellence in Machinima filmmaking.

The Academy will once again present the one-day festival, screening Machinima films throughout the day, culminating with the awards ceremony in the evening.

While works may be submitted for screenings only, the Academy encourages Machinima filmmakers to enter the festival awards. Last years awards ceremony was a high-profile event with presenters such as John Carmack (id Software), Tommy Pallotta (Waking Life) and Mark Rein (Epic Games).

The awards acknowledge excellence in Machinima under the following categories:

 Best Picture
 Best Direction
Best Virtual Performance (puppeteering, scripted animations, voice-acting)
Best Visual Design (art direction, modeling, texture design, set/level design)
Best Sound (music, sound effects, sound editing)
 Best Editing
 Best Technical Achievement
Best Independent Film (Machinima produced for under $5000 US)
Honorary Award (for significant contribution to the Machinima medium)
This year, the Academy has also created a new award: Best Commercial/Game Machinima. This award will identify excellence in Machinima such as commercially produced Machinima works and game cut sequences (in game engine only).

Please visit the Academy website for additional festival news and festival applications (to be posted soon) as well as Machinima information in general. http://www.machinima.org
