 Date: Thu Mar 06 2003
Montreal, Quebec March 5th, 2003 Softimage Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc., today announced that its SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, the industrys leading nonlinear 3-D production environment now supports the latest version of Microsoft DirectX file format .X through a new plug-in converter. Available immediately, this free downloadable file import-export tool will provide developers and artists working on the Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Xbox games platforms with fast and easy access to the rich media of Microsoft DirectX file format .X, a widely supported template-based file format used by DirectX developers.

The SOFTIMAGE|XSI .X plug-in converter features a robust, fully bi-directional import-export pipeline, supporting meshes, materials, animation, skeletons and envelopes. This development is part of Softimages Connect program, which has included the release of a suite of tools to drive interoperability between 3-D packages and streamline connections to custom pipelines.

Microsoft is pleased to have SOFTIMAGE|XSI support for the .X formats available in DirectX 9.0, a recognized standard for multimedia application development, said Dean Lester, general manager of Graphics and Gaming Technologies, Microsoft Corporation. Developers and artists now have the ability to take further advantage of the features within DirectX, while producing rich media content that will help deliver cinematic-quality games to the Windows platform.

Bringing DirectX support to the SOFTIMAGE|XSI environment is an important development in Softimages Connect program which has had wide success within the games and film markets, said Gareth Morgan, technical product manager for games/interactive of Softimage. With this newly released .X plug-in for the SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, artists and developers working on DirectX will be able to enjoy the benefits of increased creative and technical opportunities,

Pricing and availability

The SOFTIMAGE|XSI .X plug-in converter is available as a free download to all existing users of the SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.3.0 software. It can be obtained from the Softimage website at www.softimage.com.
