It consists of a 48 hour Create-A-Thon, a competition to produce digital assets; 3D Shootout (think of Max, XSI, Maya and other artists, live, head to head); Tech Workshops with demos, papers; and Tech Showcase featuring solutions from industry vendors and sponsors.
The XD will also be on the road appearing at San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Vancouver B.C., so if you are in the area, check it out !
XYZ and You have scheduled the XD Xtreme Digital Challenge for October 22 through 24, 2002 in Seattle, WA. This remarkable event will take place in a 20,000-sq. ft. hangar at Sand Point Naval Station (also known as S.P.A.C.E. - Sand Point Arts and Cultural Exchange). The main XD event, the 48-Hour Create-A-Thon, will feature professional and student teams from the Seattle area and beyond in a round-the-clock competition producing digital assets for prizes, fame, and possible future royalties.
Asset categories include model libraries, textures, audio collections, motion capture libraries, plug-ins, utilities, scripted actions, white papers, fonts, tutorials, and templates. The entire event will be streamed online by sponsor, Discreet.
The Xtreme Digital Challenge will also include the 3D Shootout - premiere 3D artists going head-to-head using 3D software of their choice in an always fun, no-holds-barred competition. Expert operators are given real-world tasks to complete within a time limit under watchful eyes of the audience. The 30 XD Challenge Workshops are led by guest speakers such as Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games, Art Director JD Alley of Xbox, Mark Long of Zombie and Steve Killinsky of Adobe, teachers from Puget Sound Center and Mesmer Animation Labs, and reps from regional digital talent agencies.
No one can miss the renowned Master of Ceremonies - Dan "Major Pixel" Kemmis - who entertains and engages attendees as the XD Challenge moves from one phase to the next. XD will also feature a Tech Showcase of leading industry vendors. These companies impact all aspects of digital content production today, from hardware to software and beyond.
The growing list of blue chip sponsors includes Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Discreet, Splutterfish, Anark, Right Hemisphere and In-Sync in addition to others. The event is free to attendees and over 700 people are expected to witness XD's mix of solution-driven tech demos, productivity-enhancing information and variety show-like character.
Later, XD goes on the road to appear at venues in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and Vancouver B.C. With approximately 3,700 professionals and more than 10,000 college-level computer graphics students, the Seattle area is remarkably significant in terms of 3D and advanced graphics activity. No venue previously existed to satisfy the informational or networking needs of this population. XYZ and You recognized the opportunity to serve in this role and developed the 3D Shootout and the XD Challenge, functioning as an event unlike any other in terms of their scope and immediacy with the audience.
The group has held several highly-attended 3D Shootouts during the last 12 months at Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center, in the Las Vegas Convention Center for the 2002 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Conference, and in San Antonio for SIGGRAPH 2002.
Dan "Major Pixel" Kemmis started the XYZ and You professional 3D graphics user group in 1996. The group has a current and active core membership of over 2,000 members that cross a broad 3D graphics market segment and global boundaries. XYZ and You strives to credibly communicate with this group as it focuses on the sharing of knowledge of how to create high quality visuals for use in animation, game production, simulation, multimedia, film, video, and presentation.
