Ottawa International Animation Festival Calls for Entries

Ottawa, Canada - February 7, 2005 - The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF 05) is issuing a worldwide call for entries for its 2005 festival, being held September 21 to 25 in Canadas capital.

Once again, were issuing our official call to animators from across Canada and around the world to submit their recent works, says Chris Robinson, the Festivals Artistic Director, to help the now annual OIAF celebrate the finest works of this unique and diverse form of cinema.

Independent, commercial and, now, student animators working in a variety of media are invited to submit their entry forms, by June 1, 2005, under six umbrella categories, including commissioned films, independent short films, student films, films for children, school showreel, feature films, and new media

The competition categories, adds Robinson, remain virtually unchanged except that we have now incorporated categories from our now defunct Ottawa International Student Animation Festival (SAFO) into the now annual OIAF. The SAFO categories added to OIAF 05 include: best school, graduate, undergraduate, elementary and secondary school film.

Another new twist that the OIAF has added is the creation of a Childrens Films competition that will be judged by a jury of local children. Every year there is controversy over the choices for Films and TV shows for Children. After the Festival a posse of kids approached the OIAF organizers to complain about the utter incompetence of the jury decisions. So this year, instead of just giving them a free t-shirt and sending them on their way, we decided to give the kids an opportunity to put their words into action.

In addition to the competition and non-competitive Showcase screenings, OIAF 05 will include special screenings devoted to Drawing in Pink: A Tribute to The Pink Panther, The Best of Pee Wees Playhouse Animation, Slovak Animation, a retrospective of award winning Italian Animator, Guianluigi Toccafondo, DIY: Canadian Independent Animation, and more.

Returning after its successful launch at Ottawa 04 is the 2nd Annual Television Animation Conference, Canadas only industry forum exclusively for television animation producers, broadcasters, and buyers to network, discuss market trends, and conduct business. The conference will be held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel on September 21 and 22 and will offer delegates a unique opportunity to connect with their targets and gain valuable insight into the Canadian and international markets.

Other events include the Animators Picnic, Technology Forum, a special market for schools and recruiting. More event information will be released in the coming months.

The OIAF 04 entry deadline is June 1, 2005. Preview tapes or DVDs must be received by June 18th, 2005. An online entry form, plus festival and Television Animation Conference information, are available on the animation festival Web site at http://www.awn.com/ottawa. Inquiries may also be sent by e-mail to [email protected] or by telephone at (613) 232-8769.
