PhaseSpace Provides Free Motion Capture at Guerilla Studio
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Tue Sep 07 2004
San Leandro, CA - September 7, 2004 - Over sixty fortunate SIGGRAPH attendees got a chance to suit up and try their hand, foot, and entire body, at one and two person motion capture this year at SIGGRAPH 2004s Guerilla Studio. PhaseSpace invited SIGGRAPH attendees in Los Angeles August 8-12, to suit up and capture their own motions in a state of the art, 16 camera optical motion tracking system.

The Guerilla Studio is an integrated network of machines for realizing ideas in 2D, 3D, 4D, and n-dimensional media, a working computer graphics laboratory for explorations in fine art, animation, science, and other CG disciplines. It features high-end computer workstations, a multitude of software (featuring 2D and 3D design), and print technologies. Artists, scientists, and engineers can walk in, create, and realize their creations right in the lab.

For the second year in a row, PhaseSpace invited SIGGRAPH attendees to try out its optical motion capture system at no charge. Adding to the excitement, they were able to watch on a monitor as the character was driven by their motions in real time, as well as attach their own characters to the motions. Participants were even able to get the data to take home with them. Those who came prepared, walked away with data that would normally have cost thousands of dollars!

Even attendees who didnt know what to expect were able to experience what it is like to work in a movie or CG TV series, and how difficult it actually is to be spontaneous and physically act with up to 100 people watching.

Over 200 motion capture sequences were created, some of them over 15 minutes long, allowing users to tell their own stories, work from a script, and act out their own projects, all at no cost. The Guerilla Studio provides access to dozens of different technologies that most people never get a chance to use. It affords a unique hands-on experience to give show attendees the chance to see the latest hardware and software and test drive them under real conditions, instead of canned demos that never seem to represent actual usage.

Peter Braccio, the 2004 Guerilla Studio Chair says; "PhaseSpace has been a fantastic addition to the Guerilla Studio. They have offered a unique opportunity for SIGGRAPH attendees to experiment with motion capture. I'd guess that well over 90% of our attendees would never get an opportunity to work with this technology without Phasespace's support over the last two years."

The PhaseSpace motion capture system is unique, in that it uses flashing LEDs to provide unique IDs to each marker on the actor. This allows two users to simultaneously interact on stage with very few problems with occlusion or marker swapping, a typical problem associated with older reflector-based systems. The sub-millimeter resolution PhaseSpace system, with a resolution of 3,600 x 3,600 at 480 frames per second, also boasts higher RFR (resolution times frame rate) than older systems having only about 2,000 x 2,000 by 166 fps RFR. Ironically, the PhaseSpace system not only offers higher performance, but is also about 1/3rd the price of other reflective based systems.

PhaseSpace also exhibited a system in the AMD booth, demonstrating ease of setup and use in bright lighting conditions and small workspaces. One of the other of many advantages the PhaseSpace system has over its competition is the ability to use the system in virtually any lighting condition indoors or outside, which reflective systems usually cannot do. With a few belly dancers, some tango and salsa dancers, several martial artists, and actors galore, the PhaseSpace system was put through its paces. Used by the US Navy, Boeing, Vox Populi, CGI Mantra, Sandia National Labs, UC Berkeley, Cambridge University and others, PhaseSpace is being utilized for entertainment, virtual reality training and human motion research all over the world.
