New "Mango" Plug-In Brings NVIDIA Gelato to Maya Pipeline
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Mon Aug 09 2004
Los Angeles, CA SIGGRAPH 2004 - August 9, 2004NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) introduced today a new Maya 6 plug-in for NVIDIAs award-winning, final-frame renderer Gelato, bringing the first hardware-accelerated, final-frame renderer to Maya artists. The new plug-in, called Mango, uses the widely-adopted Maya graphical user interface (GUI) and allows users of Alias market leading Maya 6 (and 5.0.1) software another choice in their menu of renderers.

In addition, NVIDIA announced the availability of the Gelato 1.0 renderer for Microsoft Windows XP as well as a Gelato Beta 1.1 version. Gelato provides ultra-fast, final frame rendering in conjunction with NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics. And with Mango, users of the Academy Awardwinning Maya software can select Gelato as their renderer, producing images of the highest quality in about half the time,

Mango offers Maya artists an integrated path to another great rendering option Gelato, said Shai Hinitz, Maya product manager at Alias. Adding Gelato into a Maya production environment gives studios additional hardware-acceleration for final renders. Users will appreciate the fact that Mango provides the power and performance of Gelato while taking advantage of Mayas familiar unified rendering functionality. They can install Mango, select Render Using Gelato, and start rendering right away with the Maya rendering GUI and workflow they already know.

Mango gives film and television production professionals tremendous added flexibility in the tools and shaders that they want to work with. Mango and new third-party developed utilities like a RIB-to-Gelato plug-in and a Renderman shader converter, allow production studios to use Gelato, access many of their favorite Renderman shaders, and connect to the Maya modeling and animation system within one production pipeline, said Beth Loughney, general manager of the Digital Film Group at NVIDIA.

Mango includes its own implementations of some of the more popular Maya surface and light shaders, such as lambert, phong, and blinn surface shaders. The plug-in even allows users to change the attributes of these shaders within the Maya GUI. Mango supports all Maya default light types, as well as depth-mapped and ray-traced shadows.

With Mango, users have the option of rendering to either Gelatos image viewer or the Maya 6 render window. Mango users will continue to have the Maya option of rendering selected objects in the scene or the entire scene. Mango also supports the following geometry types: NURBS with trims; polygon meshes; subdivision surfaces; and particle nodes.

Mango is available for Microsoft Windows XP and Linux platforms, and is free of charge to Gelato licensees. Distributed as an integral part of Gelato, Mango is expected to be available August 11th at http://film.nvidia.com for current Gelato customers and evaluation testers. The new version of Gelato for Microsoft Windows XP is also expected to be available August 11th at http://film.nvidia.com. Users interested in being Gelato Beta 1.1 testers may send an email to NVIDIAs Digital Film Group at [email protected].
