Immersion and Digital Element Introduce new Digitizer plugin
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Tue Aug 10 2004
Los Angeles, CA - Aug. 10, 2004 - Immersion Corporation (Nasdaq:IMMR), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Digital Element, Inc. (Oakland, Calif.), a software developer specializing in 3D programming, today announced MicroScribe(R) Connections for Maya for Mac OS X. This new software plug-in will enable Immersion's MicroScribe 3D digitizer to work directly in the popular Maya software running on Mac OS X.
The Academy Award-winning Maya software is an integrated 3D modeling, animation, effects, and rendering solution used by film and video artists, game developers, visualization professionals, and Web and print designers.

MicroScribe digitizing products let users construct detailed computer models simply by tracing over the contours of a physical object. The new plug-in from Digital Element provides seamless data flow from the MicroScribe system to Maya. Digital Element has exclusive marketing and distribution rights to the new software.

"For years Maya users on the PC have had great success with our MicroScribe digitizer, used in the creation of feature length animations such as Shrek," says Tim Tight, vice president and general manager, Immersion's Industrial Group. "We are dedicated to the Mac user community and the ease and speed that the MicroScribe system provides will be a welcome feature for them. High performance 3D digitizing is absolutely necessary for many creative applications, and it's very important that you can now get it on the Mac, the preferred platform of many creative professionals."

"Developing software products that enhance creative applications is what we do best," says Don McClure, president of Digital Element. "Many Mac users have been waiting for MicroScribe digitizer support in Maya, and I'm very pleased that we can offer such an easy-to-use solution."

"The combination of Maya's 3D and special effects tools with Apple's powerful Mac OS X technologies has further advanced the creative workflow of Mac artists," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "The tight integration of the MicroScribe digitizer within Maya takes advantage of the reliability and high performance graphics rendering engine of Mac OS X."

MicroScribe Connections for Maya give designers direct access to MicroScribe system settings through an integrated menu, allowing for detailed control over the modeling process. A Custom Reference Frame feature provides quick alignment between the MicroScribe system and the Maya workspace. Advanced digitizing features include Scan Planes and time or distance Auto Plotting. In addition, any Maya object can be parented to the virtual MicroScribe cursor, making dynamic light and camera placement fast and easy. The Mac plug-in supports Maya 6.0 and above for Mac OS X. MicroScribe Connections for Maya for Mac OS X is fully compatible with all USB-capable MicroScribe G2 hardware.
