New Low-Cost Animation Workstation to Debut at SIGGRAPH 2004
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Fri Jul 30 2004
Burlington, VT - July 30, 2004 - Animation Star, a breakthrough in 3D animation -- combining the best motion-capture hardware and software into an integrated workstation -- will launch at the annual SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Convention in Los Angeles on August 10, 2004. Ascension will demonstrate its new technology in Booth 1918 at the LA Convention Center.
Animation Star is the world's first truly affordable, fully functioning animation workstation. It includes a Pentium 4 class computer, which acts as the server box for a new Ascension motion-capture tracker and a full-feature version of Kaydara MOCAP 5 software. Communication with an animator's graphics computer is handled via a high speed Ethernet interface over which models can be imported into the motion-capture environment for animation purposes. When done, motion files can be exported in the FBX file format for final rendering and compositing. Import and export capability for most popular 3D softwares including Alias/Wavefront Maya, Discreet 3D Studio MAX, NewTek Lightwave, and Softimage 3D/XSI are supported.

Pricing for Animation Star starts at under $25,000. Special Show discounts are in effect. To meet requirements of novice as well as experienced animator's, Animation Star offers full body magnetic motion-tracking in an 8 ft (2.4m) by 8 ft (2.4m) capture zone that contains a metal distortion shield. The shield prevents steel rebar in floors and nearby metallic objects from distorting measurements. The embedded MOCAP software is the industry's leading software program for real-time capture, editing, blending and utilization of motion data. A graphical user's guide provides a simple and intuitive "Wizard" enabling animators to quickly and easily install the system, map performer motions onto a character, and run a motion-capture session.

In addition to demonstrating Animation Star's real-time capture and dynamic display of 3D characters, Ascension will conduct an hourly tutorial for digital content producers, game developers, and educators interested in learning how the workstation can be used in various animation venues.

"Animation Star will do to the animation community what the PC did to the computer industry almost 25 years ago," said Ascension Vice President Jack Scully. "We are confident that digital content creators, educators and entrepreneurs will find innovative uses -- as well as traditional ones -- for this powerful new tool, now that high cost is no longer a barrier to widespread use."
