Ascension Launches Improved Motion Capture Technology
Posted by: amigo

 Date: Thu Mar 11 2004
Burlington, VT - March 11, 2004 - Ascension Technology has released an improved version of the award-winning MotionStar Wireless tracker. With Ascensions new Advanced DC Tracking Technology, MotionStar Wireless 2 now produces greatly improved dynamic accuracy. Animators will find MotionStar outputs are almost jitter free minimizing the need to post process data.

MotionStar Wireless 2 captures the motions of up to five individuals in real time without occlusion or perceptible lag. No other tracker in the world captures as many performers motions in real time. MotionStar Wireless 2 lets users jump, spin, kick and interact with total freedom of movement -- free of trailing cables.

It also delivers the most data per sensor of all motion-capture trackers. Each sensor measures a full six degrees-of-freedom (X, Y, Z, Yaw, Pitch, Roll) solution. In a 13-sensor system, this equates to 78 dedicated data points instantly streaming onto the performers character for fully articulated and smooth tracking of each data point.

For MotionStar Wireless 2, Ascension developed new backpack electronics and improved algorithms. This results in improved vertical motion accuracy as a performer moves towards and away from the systems magnetic field generator. It also eliminates small jumps in data when a sensor is rotated about its axis. Upgrade kits are available for all existing MotionStar Wireless trackers in the field.

As an added feature to help animators produce hassle-free motion capture sessions, MotionStar Wireless 2 now comes with free use of Ascensions Environmental Analyzer. This tool lets animators find sources of metal and noise in their workspace -- the two biggest factors that previously compromised magnetic motion capture -- and take steps to eliminate them.

Richard Hince, head of motion capture at Artem Studios (West London, England) recently evaluated the new MotionStar Wireless 2 and states, "We are very excited about the improvements As the operators of one of the largest MotionStar installations in the world, we are always pushing the boundaries of what is achievable. The data quality increases with MotionStar Wireless 2 are great and will allow us to push these boundaries even further.

MotionStar Wireless is used extensively worldwide for 3D animation, biomechanical analysis, real-time visualization and interactive gaming. The trackers extensive list of credentials in the animation and entertainment field include The Getaway, Star Wars prequels, Funky Cops, Starship Troopers and Radio Shacks Battery Man.

Ascension Technology Corporation develops magnetic, optical and inertial motion-tracking solutions for 3D computer-graphics applications in military targeting systems, simulation, virtual reality, biomechanics, animation and medicine. For more information, visit www.ascension-tech.com.
