Alias Conductors Program Adds 25 New Third Party Developers
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Thu Nov 20 2003
Toronto, Canada November 20, 2003 Alias Systems, a Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) company, announced today that its recently revised Conductors Third Party Developer program is experiencing unprecedented growth, as more than 25 new developers have joined the program over the past five months. New developers are rushing to create content and products that are compatible with the Maya software product line.

Alias announced a revised three-tiered Conductors program in April of this year. The revised program addresses the different needs of the developer community with: Conductor, Semi-Conductor and Conductor Community level options.

The expansion of the conductors program was a necessity due to the tremendous volume growth that Maya has been experiencing over the past 18 months, says Bob Bennett, general manager of product development, Alias. Our Maya sales on the Mac platform have excelled to 20 percent of overall sales. And our education business has increased year over year by 25 percent, as education institutions answer the call of their students to learn the software that employers are using in the workplace.

Established Developers Move to Maya and New Developers Choose Maya First

Significant numbers of developers are moving to create products for the Maya community while new developers are choosing to produce for Maya first, as users demand the latest and best plug-ins available.

The latest addition to the Conductors Program is Digimation - one of the largest developers and publishers of 3D plug-ins, in the world. Over the past few years weve seen a shift in what customers are asking for in the plug-in world, says David Avgikos, president of Digimation. Maya is more and more the software of choice for the 3D community and the entire industry. Porting our vast library of plug-ins to Maya has become a priority as we move to answer the demand of the entire digital content community. Digimation is expected to have Maya compatible plug-ins available in late Q4 2003 at www.digimation.com/software.

The growth of Maya in both of its traditional markets of high end film/broadcast and game development is well noted but its reach has exploded since the price reduction in early 2002, says Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research (Tiburon, CA). Now its almost impossible to find a digital content creation artist, in any industry, who isnt using or making the move to Maya. And, by working with the community of third party developers, Alias is right on track to keep their existing, and new, customers more than satisfied.

Okino Computer Graphics has been involved with Maya plug-in development before and during the very upstart of the Maya Conductor Program. It is a fundamental and critically important part of our internal development, sales and marketing effort, says Robert Lansdale, CEO and co-Maya developer at Okino. Our 'PolyTrans-for-Maya' plug-in system has become our #1 requested data conversion pipeline to bi-directionally move animation and scene data between Maya and all other major 3D animation programs. Since our typical customers have multiple 3D packages in their production shops, the constant demand for our plug-in system shows just how far Maya's penetration in the digital content creation market has come since 1998.

The Conductors program also offers an opportunity for joint marketing initiatives that leverage the power of Alias global reach. There is a huge demand for a solid, production-proven render management solution at small, medium and large Maya sites all over the globe, says Richard Lewis, vice president and chief operating officer, PipelineFX. The Alias Conductors web site and bi-monthly newsletter offered us marketing opportunities to get the word about our product out to the community.

The Alias Conductors Program

Started in 1999, the Alias Conductors Program is one of the most successful Third Party Developer programs in the computer graphics field, with more than 100 members developing a wide array of market specific applications compatible with both Maya and Alias StudioTools software. The result is a multitude of exciting products designed to further extend the functionality of Alias award-winning software through market-specific tools that optimize workflow creativity and pipeline efficiency.

Developers of all kinds of software and hardware products repeatedly tell us that they are experiencing a steady increase in requests for Maya compatibility, says Craig Dean, conductors program manager. Our full featured developer program is more accessible and flexible than ever to help them succeed in achieving their business goals.
