Alias Maya enables "Valiant" to take flight
Posted by: amigo
Source: Press Release
 Date: Mon Oct 06 2003
London, UK October 6, 2003 - Alias Systems, a Silicon Graphics Inc (NYSE: SGI) company, today announced that Vanguard Animation has purchased more than 70 licenses of its Oscar-winning software Maya for the modeling and animation of its first CGI feature film, Valiant.

Valiant is being brought to life by a team of 85 CG artists, modelers and managers working at Ealing Studios, West London and with the help of 2.58m from the UK Film Council. John H. Williams, the founder of Vanguard Animation, has used Maya software in the production of other recent animated features including the critically acclaimed Shrek.

Maya is the most comprehensive 3D modeling and animation package available; its functionality and usability is second to none, making it the only viable choice for this project, says Tom Jacomb, line manager at Vanguard Animation. Valiants co-producers Curtis Augspurger and Buckley Collum, who evaluated the software, were impressed by Mayas extensive feature set as well as its position as the clear market leader and by its very large and committed user base.

The film tells the story of a lowly wood pigeon named Valiant who, despite his small size, aspires to become a member of the Royal Homing Pigeon Service during World War II, delivering vital messages from French Resistance to Allied Forces all the while avoiding the lethal enemy falcons.

Vanguard and its pool of talent are using Maya to create a feature to rival anything thats come out of Hollywood in the last few years, says Mark Cass, Alias UK Entertainment business manager. Alias is proud to be chosen as the software provider for the artists at Vanguard. We wholly support the creative team as well as the director and producers goal in developing a British animated feature film of this caliber.

Valiant is scheduled to be released in 2005.

The producer of Valiant is John H. Williams (Shrek 1 & 2), Gary Chapman is the director. Executive producers are Barnaby Thompson for Ealing Studios, Ralph Kamp for Odyssey Entertainment, Robert Jones for the UK Film Council and Keith Evans from Baker Street Media Finance. Co-producers are Eric M. Bennett, Curtis Augspurger and Buckley Collum for Vanguard Animation.
