Well it seems that at least someone is doing something right in the market. Side Effects Software, makers of Houdini have announced a Houdini Apprentice Edition, a non-commercial version of their latest release 5.5 of Houdini. This version will be made available at SIGGRAPH 2002, at the Houdini Annual Meeting on July 21st at 4PM.
The Apprentice version comes full-featured, allowing artists to basically do everything they would with the commercial version but are limited to 640x480 resolutions and have a small watermark in the lower right hand corner of each render (with rendering limited to Mantra renderer only). The license keys will last 30 days and will be automatically renewed over the Internet.
