Tomcat Cartoon Shader NPR plugin for A|W Maya Posted by: amigo Source: email Date: Wed Jun 04 2003 Tomcat cartoon shader is a new NPR plugin for Maya 4.5 from ToonShade that makes use of existing elements in Maya. It can be used from simple black-line cartoon style renderings to complex sketch-like 3d illustations and animations.
Toonshade originally developed the plugin for their "Tom the cat" short movie, tested in companies like Universal studios, and is used currently in production at Giant Killer Robots.
Tomcat toon shader works with Maya Paint Effects (tm), making use of all its presets and brushes to create stroke effects on your 3d models. You can tune everything at will to achieve the desired effect (ink, oil, hand-drawn, sketch...)
The plugin is fully integrated into Maya. Simply create a new cartoonShader, attach a brush to it, render and look at the result.
Tomcat Toon Shader is currently available for Windows platform only. IRIX and OS X versions are actually in development.
The technique used in Tomcat Cartoon Shader is inspired from real-time edge detection; that's why it it so fast. It is also very accurate; the outlines on your image won't vanish or jump even by 1 pixel from one frame to another. This stability is due to the fact it works on 3D space instead of 2D.
The use of Maya Paint Effects also allows it a vast choice in the final rendered look.
